What Is E-Commerce?

It takes the action into the virtual world of sales and marketing; for many corporations a needed presence to maintain an advantage. But what is it and how does it work? What could be done in person can now be done anywhere in the world with a computer. This gives the consumer freedom and on some levels privacy but also the retailer a multi-faceted marketing presence. While having an e-commerce presence is warranted today in the age of wireless communication. What the consumer sees on the web site is just the start of how the process works; behind the scenes are lines of code and commands that make sure the transaction remains secure, protecting the consumer and the retailer at once.

There are many advantages for an organization to incorporate an e-strategy into its marketing strategy. Such implementation opens many doors to not only the organization but also the consumer. By having a website, the corporation is able to stay competitive in the market, where they may not be the only product. It gives them a creative advantage in introducing new advertising campaigns. Basically, e-commerce gives a company new presence in a saturated market. Virtual ways of contacting consumers is on the rise. Not only can a retailer use traditional methods of marketing but also virtual ones as well like email, e-newsletters, instant messaging and web site promotions like games and contests. What e-commerce does for the consumer is that it allows them to shop in the privacy of his or her home. In this modern life where people’s time is precious, a web site works well in bringing the store into the household.

When implementing an e-commerce strategy and building a web site, the organization needs to take into consideration issues of risk management of information. In other words, steps must be taken to protect client privacy and maintain a secure site. This not only must happen for the client’s sake but also the company’s sake because they need to protect the company’s brand identity and intellectual property. When implementing these protections and security software, the company must take into account licensing, patents and other legal issues. They cannot promise more than they can deliver. Web site content has come under fire in recent years because legal issues have not been addressed.

While e-commerce opens doors, it also puts people at risk of identity theft and other forms of electronic fraud. In this respect, web site content not only needs to communicate the correct message but also carry the correct transaction without a threat to the client. Much of identity theft is not about maintaining secure sites or handing out privacy disclosures but more in staying ahead of virtual thieves. Steps can be taken in implementing cutting-edge programs, technology for authentication but that will be for not if the thieves also use the same technology. This has brought about new classifications of white collar crime and made the Internet a breeding ground for illegal opportunities. While security is important, also is the privacy of the client. Companies must make this a top priority to not only take the steps toward protecting his or her information but to also protect them from inappropriate web material. Pop-ups are a fact of the Internet; however, if the company takes the time to filter web advertising, the customer will be grateful.
